June 4, 2026
For the first time in more than 30 years, the world’s biggest soccer tournament will be hosted in North America, creating a sustained, weeks-long event that directly overlaps with core summer consumption moments. Unlike a single holiday or championship game, the tournament unfolds over multiple weeks to drive repeated occasions for gathering, hosting, and at-home viewing.
At a time when many consumers are under financial pressure, this summer's global tournament is especially important. Ibotta purchase data indicates that shoppers are already adjusting spending behavior leading into summer: travel is down, stay-cations are up. Ibotta’s survey of 500 consumers reinforces those findings, with a large majority of respondents indicating that saving money is a priority heading into summer.
The tournament intensifies this dynamic by creating a sustained series of hosting moments inside an already shifting summer economy.
A value-driven consumer is reshaping the basket
Since early March, Ibotta receipt data shows broad-based softness across many CPG categories following the fuel price spike. At the same time, total basket size has remained relatively stable.
Staples such as produce, dairy, and pantry essentials have remained flat, with average daily purchases down only marginally. By contrast, convenience and discretionary categories including frozen meals, snacks, and ready-made items have declined by roughly nine percent on average.
The survey supports this pattern. A majority of respondents plan to cook more at home, prioritize value, and look for ways to stretch their grocery budget over the summer.
These signals point toward a more selective and occasion-driven spending environment, a shift that creates the foundation for how demand may evolve during this key summer sporting event.
Anticipating the tournament purchase cycle
Ibotta receipt data from previous years indicate categories tied to gatherings show continued purchase activity across multiple weeks, with June demand carrying into July and often August.
This pattern reflects how consumers approach hosting over time. Early purchases establish the basket, and subsequent trips reinforce it. As a result, certain categories shift from occasional purchases to repeat buys throughout the tournament window.
This event introduces an additional cycle of occasions due to fans hosting or attending watch parties during the tournament. The anticipated scale of fan festivals, public screenings, and watch parties across North America indicates that it will likely drive a sustained cycle of social viewing occasions over the course of the tournament.
Event-driven categories show measurable lift
The divergence across categories becomes more pronounced when looking at event-driven demand.
Ibotta Performance Network data from prior summer moments shows that categories tied to hosting respond strongly when aligned with high-traffic events. Tortilla chips see more than a 100 percent lift when supported by offers. Dips and spreads follow closely, with lift approaching 90 percent under promotion. Soft drinks also show meaningful gains when activated, outperforming their organic baseline.
These gains stand in contrast to broader category softness. In a value-driven environment, baseline demand for some of these products may be flat or declining. When tied to a relevant occasion and supported by promotions, performance shifts significantly.
This is where the tournament becomes especially relevant. It concentrates demand into a specific set of categories that are highly responsive to activation.
Promotions are a key driver of outcomes
As consumers become more selective about where they spend, the data shows that promotions play a central role in converting intent into purchase. Across multiple summer moments, Ibotta data demonstrates that promoted categories consistently outperform their non-promoted counterparts.
Bottled water, for example, has shown the ability to reverse negative organic trends and deliver strong positive lift when on offer. Soft drinks and snack categories follow a similar pattern. At the same time, redeemer growth across the Ibotta Performance Network has increased by roughly 50 percent over the past two years. This indicates that consumers are actively seeking out offers as part of their shopping behavior.
The survey data reinforces this trend. A significant portion of respondents say they plan to use cash back, coupons, and promotions to manage their spending this summer.
Together, these signals show that in the current environment, demand is highly influenced by value-based activation. Brands that show up with relevant offers are more likely to capture share during key moments.
The hosting basket is expanding
The composition of the basket is also evolving. Ibotta data shows continued growth in better-for-you and non-alcoholic beverage categories, both in 2025 and into early 2026.
This suggests that consumers are bringing a broader set of preferences into hosting occasions. Traditional snack and beverage categories remain important, but they are now complemented by alternatives that reflect changing consumption habits.
The international soccer tournament audience adds another layer to this dynamic. The tournament draws a younger and more diverse group of consumers, with strong engagement among Hispanic households.
This influences both the types of products purchased and the way gatherings are structured.
For brands, this expands the opportunity beyond a narrow set of categories and into a wider range of consumption occasions.
Demand builds into the Fourth of July
The timing of the tournament amplifies its impact.
Because it runs from late June into early July, it overlaps directly with the lead-up to the U.S. Independence Day. Ibotta seasonal data shows that the Fourth of July is already one of the highest-volume moments of the summer, with strong lift across snacks, beverages, and grilling essentials.
Early June marks the beginning of tournament-driven purchasing. Mid-June reflects repeated buying as hosting becomes routine. Late June introduces additional demand tied to holiday preparation. By early July, these patterns converge, resulting in a compounded peak.
This progression highlights the importance of timing. Much of the demand for July 4th is influenced by purchasing behavior that begins weeks earlier.
Rather than separate peaks, the market could experience a more continuous build in hosting-related demand.
A shifting summer creates targeted growth opportunities
The combined data from Ibotta’s receipt tracking and consumer survey points to a clear takeaway.
Economic pressure is influencing how consumers spend, and some categories will continue to face headwinds. At the same time, other categories are positioned to benefit from shifts in behavior. Spending is being redirected toward occasions, toward products that support those occasions, and toward brands that offer value.
This worldwide sporting event accelerates this dynamic through a sustained period of high-intent activity. For CPG brands, the opportunity lies in understanding where demand is moving and how to align with it. Categories tied to hosting, particularly those that respond well to promotions, are positioned to see gains even as broader spending remains constrained.
